Kilmessan camogie News

July 25, 2014
It was return to championship action for Kilmessan camogiers this week and it was a week of mixed fortune for the two sides.

Meath Senior Camogie Championship played @ Ratoath Tues 22nd July

Half time score: Kilmessan 4-10 Ratoath 0-3
Full time score: Kilmessan 8-25 Ratoath 1-6

Despite taking the opening score from an excellent Sinead Beagan free in the first minute, Ratoath were well outclassed in this 3rd round senior championship tie with Kilmessan dominating in almost all sections of the field.
The defending champions showed no signs of rustiness after a long break and quickly got into their attacking stride. The full forward line of Kelly Gorman, Katie Ni Choileain and Megan Thynne scored a massive 5-12 from play between them with Thynne top scorer with a personal tally of 3-3. Others to shine in what was a comfortable victory was corner back Joelle Smyth, half backs Ailbhe Lynch and Maeve O'Leary and mid-fielder Frances Lynch whose high fielding and long range scores were a joy to watch. Ratoath are a very young side and found the going difficult however they have already recorded two wins this year and they definitely have a future star in Amy Gaffney whose blistering pace caused problems for the Kilmessan defence at times and she chipped in with an excellent goal and 2 points from play. Others who tried hard were Anna Fagan and free taker Beagan.

Next up for Kilmessan in senior Championship is Kiltale which will be played Tues 29th July @7.30pm in Kiltale

Meath Intermediate Camogie Championship played @ Kilmessan Wed 23rd July

Half time score: Kilmessan 3-2 Boardsmill 2-4
Full time score: Kilmessan 3-4 Boardsmill 2-7

It finished all square in Kilmessan last wed evening with Kilmessan and Boardsmill with both teams contributing to what was a tense encounter in the final quarter.
Having lost their opening round against Navan O'Mahonys, Kilmessan's second team were out to give a good performance against Boardsmill who were playing their first match as they had a bye in the opening round.
Boosted by the return of former senior captain Sarah Ross whose was deployed at full forward, Kilmessan got off to a great start with Ross bagging 1-1 in the opening quarter however Boardsmill bounced back with two goals of their own in quick succession followed by 2 points. Ross added a further 1-1 before half time and after Centre forward Orla Doyle moved to corner forward she was in the right place to knock a goalmouth scramble into the net to leave the score 3-2 to 2-4 at half time with Kilmessan leading by the narrowest of margins.
After introducing a number of substitutes just before half time and early in the second half the Kilmessan forward line looked a more threatening outfit however the rearguard failed to get the ball into their forwards enough to cause further problems for the Boardsmill defence and with newly transferred county star Katie Hackett starting to show her pace with making strong attacking runs the Kilmessan defence were the ones who came under pressure conceding far too many frees which were punished by Boardsmill. Hackett, the former Trim player scored an excellent point from after a break from mid-field.
Kilmessan could only manage two points in the second half, both from substitutes Ashling Mc Loughlin and Lauren Gorman. Kilmessan will be disappointed with the result despite claiming a point as now they will surely have to win their two remaining matches and hope for other results to go their way in order to qualify for the knockout stages. In a battling performance, best for Kilmessan were Emma Fitzgerald and Sarah Ross.
