FL Div 2: Michaels come away with the points.
July 07, 2014
St Michaels David Lynch with Conor O'Sullivan Walterstown during the Division 2 FL game at Walterstown
St. Michaels 0-15
Walterstown 0-13.
St. Michaels came away from Walterstown on Sunday with two valuable points after a hard earned victory in a game that ebbed and flowed throughout with some highly entertaining football but the winners were made to sweat it out in the dying minutes as they clung on to a one point lead after Walterstown parked their bus in the St. Michaels half of the pitch and sent over 5 unanswered points to trail by just the minimum.
St. Michaels got off to the better start with points from Ciaran Lynch, Peter O'Connell and Oran Meehan putting them into an early lead on 5 minutes, the home side settled and the exchanges for the remainder of the half were keenly contested with the sides level on no less than 3 occasions. Meehan added St. Michaels 4th point on 12 minutes, Walterstown levelled matters at 0-4 apiece on 22 minutes, David Lynch put his side back in front but Walterstown replied almost immediately and 3 minutes later they went ahead for the first and only time. Kevin Cassidy finished off a good move between himself and Ronan Cassidy to level matters once more and a well taken point from Ciaran Lynch in the first minute of injury time gave the visitors a 0-7 to 0-6 interval lead.
Like the start of the opening half St. Michaels were quick into their stride after the resumption and by the 45th minute had extended their lead to 6 points, 0-14 to 0-8 after points from Oran Meehan 0-2, and one apiece from Peter O'Connell, Paddy Clarke, Ronan & Ciaran Lynch and Kevin Cassidy, the latter was a fine effort after the Walterstown kick out was well won by Paddy Clarke who ran at goal and laid it off to Cassidy who popped it over. However St. Michaels failed to build on that momentum and for the remaining 15 minutes they could not find the target and were under constant pressure in their own half as Walterstown whittled the lead back to just a point, but time ran out on Walterstown and St. Michaels did manage one more attack which resulted in Ciaran Lynch sending over the insurance point in the 61st minute.
Along with the scorers Jamie Reilly, Dáithí Reilly and Paddy Clarke were others to impress for St. Michaels.
