Sad times for Meath GAA

April 24, 2014

The late Victor Duffy
A number of high profile deaths in the past week or so has rocked Meath GAA.

Neil Halpin of Dunshaughlin who served the Black and Amber as Chairman just before the glory days during the 1990s. Since he had acted as a loyal sponsor of the club.

Noel Mangan, popularly known as Jazz was another well known Dunshaughlin clubman to pass away in recent days.

The Ballinacree club are mourning the death of Eamonn Tuite, a stong central player for St Brigids from the late 60s until the 80s.

Large crowds turned out for the funeral of Curraha girl Elaine Galwey. Elaine was the daughter of former Curraha star Sean Galwey. Sean also passed to his eternal reward last January.

Today, Thursday, huge crowds attended the funeral of Gaeil Colmcille clubman Victor Duffy. So articulate, Victor was a vital source of information to these offices over the years. At County Board level he was a vital figure behind the scenes, especially under the chairmanship of his good friend Fintan Ginnity.

Pat Dunne, from Navan, was a talented traditional musician and had a long musical association with former Meath All Ireland medal winner Tom Duff. Pat and former Meath Juvenile Chairman Michael McMahon were lifetime friends.

Ann Ratty was a member of the very popular Tormay family from Kells. Her sons Mark and Ken were talented players with both the old De La Salle club and later Navan O Mahonys.

At the end of March Kilbride mourned the death of the legendary Wardie O Sullivan. Wardie, a Meath minor and junior player, served his beloved club in practically every official capacity over many decades. He was the captain of the first Kilbride team to capture the Keegan Cup in 1964.

May God be good to all of them.

P.S. On the subject of GAA bereavements we would love clubs to fill us in with details and as quickly as possible.
