U16FL: Tones fall short against Na Fianna

April 23, 2014

Matthew Melady Wolfe Tones
Wolfe Tones 3-04
Na Fianna 3-14

Na Fianna led for most of this game apart from a brief period shortly before half time when Tones held a 2 point lead thanks to a Matthew Melady goal to leave the score Wolfe Tones 2- 02 Na Fianna 0-06 after 28 minutes.

Melady had been denied a goal minutes earlier when the Na Fianna keeper saved from close range at the expense of a 65. Nathan Sheridan's 65 dropped short but Thomas Blaney pounced to add a point for the Tones. A Nathan Sheridan goal and a Thomas Blaney free early on had accounted for the rest of the Tones scores. Na Fianna hit a purple patch in the run in to half time and added 1 03 without reply to hold a 4 point interval lead, Wolfe Tones 2 02 Na Fianna 1 09.

Hopes of a Tones recovery were dashed as Na Fianna opened the second half with an early goal followed by a point to lead by 2 11 to 2 02. Thomas Blaney pointed for the Tones and when Matthew Melady added his second goal of the evening Tones harboured hopes of a recovery. Na Fianna however sensing the danger added 1 02 over the following 10 minutes and with 10 minutes remaining led by 3 13 to 3 03. Tones pressed hard over the remainder of the game and went looking for goals but Na Fianna defended well in numbers and all Tones could muster over this period was a Thomas Blaney point and Na Fianna ran out deserving winners.

Even though Tones trailed for most of the game they battled hard and had good performances from Luke Condi, Neil Murray Oisin Mac Ghinneartaigh, Cian O Neil, Matthew Melady, Alan Lynam and Thomas Blaney.
