JFC B: Mary's continue good form

April 22, 2014

Erin Madden is about to send over a point for St Mary's against Trim in the Junior B championship match at Simonstown
St Mary 4-9
Trim 0-8

St Marys had a comfortable win over Dunderry in the first round in Bective and were hoping for a stiffer test in Simonstown last Sunday. They faced a largely young outfit from Trim and were keen to continue their impressive run having won all competitive games in 2014.

St Marys got the dream start when along ball found Stephen Bishop on the end line who palmed well to find Robbie Callaghan who in turn palmed coolly to the net. Bishop then pointed well from play. Trim finally got on the score sheet with a point from a free. This spurred St Marys on and when Brian Smith found Robbie Callaghan he swiftly off loaded to James lynch who realised Cormac Drew who unleased an unstoppable shot to the top corner. St Marys were now 6 to the good and both sides exchanged 5 points each before half time; points from play from Callaghan, Eirin Madden, Bishop and 2 from Drew ensured St Marys kept their 6 point lead at the interval, St Marys 2-6 Trim 0-6.

St Marys started the second period the brighter with Madden scored well from play, Trim then pulled one back before Captain Joe Moore scored his first of the game. Trim's number 10 then scored what would be their last score. An impressive Drew then got his third from play and moments later James Lynch was fouled in the square and Drew confidently dispatched the resultant penalty. St Marys now lead by 10. And just as the fat lady was clearing her throat St Mary's substitute Nicky Gogan was found 14 yards from goal and his effort looped over the despairing Trim goal keeper.

A 13 point win didn't tell the true story of the game Trim had possession, alas St Marys were much more clinical and their often maligned forward line produced the goods and have now scored 7 goals in 2 championship outings.
