U16 FL: St Michaels hold on

April 14, 2014

Mark O'Brien St Michaels
St. Michaels 2-6
St. Peters Dunboyne 1-8.

St. Michaels thought the referee would never blow the final whistle in this match in Carlanstown on Saturday afternoon last as they hung on for dear life as visitors St. Peters Dunboyne whittled away their 5 point lead to just a single point in the third minute of injury time.

St. Michaels, with the wind to their backs started the sharper and added all of their first half's tally in the opening quarter through Scott Doyle 1-0, Shane McDonnell 0-2 and Shane McCormack 0-1, but try as they might they failed to score in the remaining 15 minutes of the half and one was left to wonder if they had done enough playing with the aid of that very strong wind, as their opponents struggled against it and failed to get on the score board, trailing 1-3 to 0-0 at the interval.

St. Peters Dunboyne opened their account with two points in the opening 6 minutes of the second half, Shane McCormack replied two minutes later with an excellent point from along the sideline, but the visitors dominated the next 10 minutes sending over 3 points without reply reducing the deficit to just 2 points 0-5 to 1-4. Then in a 5 minute spell of St. Michaels domination Stephen Dolan and Shane McCormack added a point apiece and Ewan Moran got an all important 2nd goal to lead 2-6 to 0-5 on 51 minutes, but it was all St. Peters Dunboyne from that point to the final whistle in the third minute of injury time as they registered 1-3 without reply as St. Michaels hung on for a single point win. Along with the scorers others to play well for St. Michaels were Joseph Curran, Conor Moran, Caolan McConnell, Ben Reilly & Mark O'Brien.
