Tailteann Cup: Moynalty by the minimum

January 25, 2020

Kilmainhamwood's David Russell

Moynalty 1-10 Kilmainhamwood 1-09

Moynalty ran out winners in a close and competitive encounter in the opening round of the Tailteann cup against Kilmainhamwood on a cold evening in Moynalty.

The Wood lined out with a mixture of both youth and experience in our first outing of 2020.

The Wood were first out of the blocks with a David Russell rebound goal after Moynalty keeper saved his penalty. However, Moynalty responded within 60 secs with a well finished goal.

The experienced full forward, David Russell gave the Wood the lead again in the 11th minute after good work by newcomer, Jamie Fagan. A Niall Bennett free extended our lead and an excellent score from an acute angle, after good work by Cathal Bennett, by the impressive Dave Russell in the 22nd minute gave the Wood a 3 point cushion. However, Moynalty kicked the next 3 points to level it before a long range pointed free from the ever-green Michael Shankey, on the stroke of halftime gave the Wood the lead by the bare minimum at half time,1-05 to 1-04.

Moynalty kicked the first 2 points of the 2nd half to take the lead for the first time. A Niall Bennett free in the 39th min levelled things up. Another free from Bennett in the 47th min levelled things again

However, Moynalty kicked the next 3 points without reply to give them a 3-point lead entering the last 5 mins. Another Niall Bennett free on 59th min and a David Russell point on struck of 60th min, left the Wood within a point of the hosts entering injury time.

Kilmainhamwood pushed hard for an equaliser with Goalkeeper Damo Russell even entering the attack. However, it was not to be for the Wood. We take alot of encouragement from this game with the usual solid performances from old timers Andy Farrelly, Michael Shankey, Dave Russell, Padraic Barber and Gary Yorke. With the introduction of newcomers Jonny Reilly, Jamie Fagan, Brian Cassidy and Dean Carolan, as well as comebacks from long term knee injuries for Declan Reilly and David Carolan, it gives good hope for positive days ahead.

Kilmainhamwood: Damo Russell, Jude Collins, Padraic Barber, David Carolan, Paul Carolan, Andy Farrelly, Jamie Fagan, Gary Yorke, Cathal Bennett, Brian Cassidy, Michael Shankey (0-1f), Harry Corbally, Niall Bennett (0-4f,) David Russell (1-4), Declan Reilly.  Subs Niall Conlon for B Cassidy (ht,) Dean Carolan for Harry Corbally (45), Jonny Reilly for David Carolan(55)
