November 02, 2019

St Pats JP Ryan is at full stretch to block Sean Griffin's (Na Fianna) shot during the Meath Junior 2 HC final at Pairc Tailteann

Na Fianna 1-10 St. Patricks 0-12

A five star display from second half substitute David Kirby swung this Meath Junior 2 Hurling Championship final Na Fianna's way at a wet and dull Pairc Tailteann.

St Pats will feel that they left this one behind as they controlled most of the game.

The lively Kean Flynn hit two early points for the winners but the Stamullen outfit responded in fine style to lead 0-5 to 0-3 after 10 minutes, their scores coming from Ciaran De Barra, Neil O'Flaherty, the impressive Diarmuid Quinn (2) and Gerry O'Donoghue. O'Flahery and and a another brace from Quinn gave St. Pats a 0-8 to 0-6 cushion at the break.

Enter veteran David Kirby to the Na Fianna full forward line at the beginning of the second half. With twenty minutes got on the clock St Pats still held that two point advantage 0-12 to 0-10. Kirby accounted for three of those Na Fianna points while Quinn added to his tally with three fine efforts for the team in white and green.

The crucial score came in the 28th minute when Kirby gained possession on the 21 yard line and blasted an unstoppable shot past Pats keeper Fergus Minogue to put his team a point ahead.

Thats how it stayed even with four minutes of injury time. Diarmuid Quinn had an opportunity to level matters and set up a replay but his free went agonisingly wide.

After the game Jim Mullery presented the cup to Na Fianna captain Shane Burke.
