MFC Div 5: Oldcastle make journey worthwhile

August 16, 2019

Oldcastle's Pearse Sheridan

Moynalvey\Boardsmill 4-07 Oldcastle 4-15

Oldcastle made the long journey to Moynalvey worthwhile as they registered an opening round win in the minor championship.

Playing against a strong breeze, Oldcastle got off the mark with a Ryan Kevin point in the 2nd minute. This was followed by two points from the boot of Pearse Sheridan before the home side replied with three points of their own. Ryan Kevin won the ball in midfield and played a long ball into J.P. Purcell who fired to the net for the opening goal of the game. The home side were pushing for a goal of their own but Ross McCann was outstanding in the Oldcastle goals and pulled off five great saves and also was very comfortable under the high dropping ball. Lloyd Colleran set up Eoin Muldoon for a nice point before Lloyd grabbed a point of his own. Moynalvey\Boardsmill finally finished to the net via the help of the upright but J.P Purcell was on fire up front and as the first half came to a close he grabbed two goals in four minutes to leave the half-time score Moynalvey/Boardsmill 1-05 Oldcastle 3-09.

At the start of the second half Oldcastle had a 10 point cushion and the wind at their backs but that didn’t stop the home side from coming out all guns blazing and scored 1-01 in the opening minutes. Colin Halpin and Darren Connell were breaking up a lot of attacks and along with Brian Hetherton stopped a number of scoring opportunities. Ryan Kevin won the ball on the left wing and played a cross field pass to Lloyd Colleran. Lloyd looked up and hit a pass in the direct of Ciaran Connell who was now operating in the half forward line. Despite having his back to the goal and moving in the wrong direction Ciaran somehow flicked the ball past the advancing keeper and into the net for Oldcastle’s first score of second half. Pearse Sheridan was causing trouble (as usual!) with his speedy runs into the Moynalvey\Boardsmill half and he added two points before full-back Brian Hetherton found himself in an advanced position and coolly slotted over the bar.

The home side were not taking it lying down and added two more goals to keep the pressure on Oldcastle. The Oldcastle defence were working hard as the home side looked to get back into the game. Moynalvey had the luxury of having a few subs and the fresh legs made Oldcastle work even harder. As time ticked away Pearse Sheridan grabbed three more points to secure the victory on a scoreline Moynalvey/Boardsmill 4-07, Oldcastle 4-15.

Oldcastle have a bye in the next round, and as a result we have a break of a full month before facing Blackhall Gaels.
