Glorious sunshine greets hurlers for Poc Fada at Loughcrew Cairns

A great day for Loughcrew Gaels on the Cairns

Beautiful sunshine brought crowds out to Loughcrew Cairns on Easter Monday for the launch of Loughcrew Gaels, a combination of Kilskyre and Moylagh juvenile hurling teams.

The Poc Fada route took the road less travelled, with the participants and spectators enjoying the wonderful clear views of the surrounding counties en route to the summit. Teams consisting of young and old took on the challenge with gusto, with an exhibition of ball striking in perfect conditions.

Some well-earned refreshments were provided at the summit to allow all catch their breath and enjoy the warm breeze and beautiful vista, and with the Cairns providing the perfect backdrop. It was inspiring to see so many children participating, showing off their skills in the ancient game at the ancient site, a most appropriate setting for the event

The Kilskyre Moylagh partnership is nothing new of course. Playing together at adult level for a number of years, partnership at underage seems a natural progression. The catchment area for Loughcrew Gaels goes well beyond the villages of Kilskyre and Moylagh with a strong tradition of players from Ballinlough, Killalon, Crossakiel, Carnaross, Kilmainham and Oldcastle, and it was great to see those areas all represented with a mix of juvenile, current and retired hurlers. It is hoped the energy and enthusiasm seen at this event will be carried through to increased participation levels and ultimately success at underage and adult grades. This is following on from the great work in the national schools by our dedicated coaches and of course our local club man Sean Gerathy being named Meath hurling captain.

We also got an opportunity to sport our new Juvenile jerseys, which were kindly sponsored by Leona Farrelly, Oldcastle House Hotel. We were met with a warm welcome and well fed by Leona at the hotel after the Poc Fada, where she was presented with a signed hurl by the All Ireland winning Limerick Hurling Team, kindly donated by our Limerick friends. A fitting end to a great day.
