Ashbourne Community School claimed The Brendan Carthy 7 a side on Thursday last. This is an annual U16 boys blitz competition organised by Dundalk IT.
In the group stages the Meath boys overcame Ardee CS 1-9 to 0-6 and De La Salle 1-11 to 1-4. Ashbourne got a bye for the third group game meaning they topped the group and were through to the quarter finals.
Ashbourne played St MaCartans and it finished 2-3 to 1-6 with the game going to penalties. Jake Pope, Shane Kane and Conor Foley stepped up to score with goalkeeper Justin Hogan making a great save to secure the win.
In the semi final Ashbourne faced Our Lady's Castleblaney and despite a late comeback held on to win 1-9 to 2-4
It was an all Meath final against St Pats of Navan. At half time Ashbourne were trailing by one point and as the lead went back and forth in the second half it was not until in the dying seconds that Jake Pope who won Player of the Tournament put over a free and force the game to extra time.
Ashbourne came out in extra time with intensity and stretched the lead to 10 points with goals from Niall Rooney, Jake Pope and Kevin Cully. St Pats scored a late point and goal to narrow the gap, but it was too little too late and as the final whistle sounded Ashbourne won by 6 with a score of 3-12 to 2-9
