FL Div 2: Another point for Carnaross

March 12, 2019

Killian Porter Carnaross

Carnaross 1-11  Trim 1-11

Carnaross shared the spoils with visitors Trim after a tight affair on Saturday evening. It could have gone either way with several missed chances in the final minutes but ultimately the draw was a fair reflection on the game.

Carnaross started brightly with points from Killian Porter and Dermot McGee in the opening minutes before the visitors pulled level. The home side saw plenty of the ball in the middle period of the half but squandered possession through a combination of sloppy passing and sticky defending from Trim. A pair of frees from Frank O’Reilly and a Patrick McDermott point nudged Carnaross ahead but again Trim pegged them back with three unanswered points. The two sides traded points before the whistle to leave the scores tied at 6 apiece at the break.

Midfielder Tomás Plunkett raided up field to open the scoring for the Ross in the second period before the home side were dealt two body blows in quick succession. The first came when Trim gathered possession on the Carnaross 45 yard line before breaking with devastating pace and rattling the net for the game’s first goal. Carnaross were then down to 14 men soon after when Plunkett picked up his second yellow after a collision in the Trim half.

The prospects looked bleak for Carnaross trailing by four with a numerical disadvantage but they responded brilliantly. Wing back Stephen Flattery sparked the comeback after cutting in from sideline and sailing his effort high and over the bar. Porter then continued his fine scoring form with a third point before O’Reilly gave Carnaross an unlikely lead after picking the ball up on the end line and surging past the Trim cover to finish with the left.

However, as was the case throughout this contest, Trim recovered from this setback and kept the scoreboard ticking with some pointed frees. They had a couple of gilt-edged chances and were denied by a goal line clearance at one stage. Carnaross also had their chances to win it late on but had to settle for a draw after the final score from McGee brought this entertaining contest to a close.
