Ladies MFL Div 5: Michaels hang on to earn final spot

September 17, 2018

St Michaels Brioch Meehan with Aoife Doyle and Emily Hevey Clonard during the ladies MFL Div 5 final.

St. Michaels 3-09, Clonard 3-08

This certainly was an enthralling encounter full of all the right ingredients played under lights in Carlanstown on Friday evening last and one that provided a pretty pulsating finale with the saints just about hanging on to win by the bare minimum and book a place in the final.

The game started in driving rain which didn't affect the standard of play as both sides tagged on early scores from play with Clonard getting off to a great start posting 1-2 in the opening five minutes. St. Michaels replied with four unanswered points from Erin Lynch (2) and one apiece from Emma McDonnell and Sheena O'Donnell. Clonard followed up with another point from play before both sides traded a goal apiece with Sheena O'Donnell on target for St. Michaels while Clonard found the net three minutes later for a 2-3 to 1-4 half time lead.
Within two minutes of the re-start O'Donnell added a further 1-1 to her tally to put St. Michaels two points to the good, however Clonard reduced the deficit to a point on 36 minutes but both sides struggled for the next ten minutes to find scores with both sets of defences working to good effect. It took a fine effort from Claire Halpin after a great run from Seona Lynch, who had an excellent game from mid-field and her hard work was rewarded when she finished to the net to go 3-6 to 2-5 in front at the end of the third quarter. Erin Lynch posted two more points from play however Clonard to their credit were by no means dead and buried, their fighting spirit and coolness showed as between the 54th and 57th minutes they registered 1-3 without reply to level the match however St. Michaels had the last word as the ice cool Seona Lynch converted a free in the first minute of injury time to secure a place in the final.
