FL Div 2: Lynch fires Trim to another vital win

June 20, 2018

Trim's Aaron Lynch

Castletown 0-14 Trim 3-12

Brendan Murphy's team had another good night in Div 2 of the All County Football league in Castletown.

Trim beat their host and intermediate football championship rivals to record back to back wins in the league for the first time this season. This victory gives the south Meath club hope in their quest to avoid the drop to Div 3. For the second game in a row Murphy's charges avoided conceding a goal and this seems to be the recipe for success because in all three wins in the league Trim has not concede a goal.

The visitors fielded their strongest team in the league to date and this proved to be a vital ingredient to winning this match. Ger Dwane, Declan Dowling and Shane Downs in the full back line in particular played very well and never gave an inch to their direct opponents. The half back line of Alan Douglas, Dimmy Higgins and Daryl Phelan were the launch pad for attack after attack. Once again young Aaron Lynch was Trim's top scorer and finished the match with a very impressive one goal and six points, his goal coming in the 18th minute at a vital stage of the opening half.

Aaron was the best player on view by a country mile in Castletown last night. Trim got the score board moving in the first minute with a point from Lynch. Castletown playing against a very strong wind answered with two points by the third minute. The north Meath club the failed to raise a flag for the next ten minutes. In this time Trim had added three points from play from the boot of Paul Munnelly, James Cullen and Lynch.

Trim were two points up playing with the advantage of a strong wind. Castletown pulled a point back at the midway point of the first half to leave just one between the sides. Aaron Lynch then got his team's first goal. Alan Douglas won a ball in the trim half back line, he carried the ball and played a one two with Francis Murphy, that exchange of hand passes with Murphy left Douglas in plenty of room, he took the ball forward, drew the full back and flicked a lovely pass to Lynch who slipped the ball past the Castletown keeper. Lynch added another point before Owen McGrath struck a wonderful shot from twenty five yards out to the roof of the Castletown net. A brilliant strike from McGrath and just what the doctor ordered before the half time whistle. This left the Town team eight points to the good but in fairness to Castletown they fought back and added three points before the break.

Half Time Score : Castletown 0-6 Trim 2-5

Trim were first to score in the second half with a point from the evergreen Owen McGrath. The teams traded points in the next couple of minutes before James Cullen struck the back of the net for a fine individual goal. Alan Douglas, Ciaran O'Rourke and Cullen then added points to leave Trim nine ahead. Castletown needed some inspiration to get themselves back into this match. They were battling hard and with the aid of the strong wind got six unanswered points between the 39th and 55th minute.

There was now only three points between the teams. Trim have battled to the final whistle in every match this season and now they needed to show these qualities again to win the two vital points on offer.  This they did and Aaron Lynch was the man to get the match winning scores. He hit three unanswered points  in the last five minutes to secure a vital win for the team in Red and White.

Trim now are second to bottom a point behind Castletown and two behind Dunderry with three games left to play while the other two clubs just above them have just two to play.

If Trim can get three wins in these matches they will give them every chance of survival. With the battling qualities they are displaying they will have a real go.
