B FL Div 5: McGovern rescues a point for Kells

May 24, 2018

Gary McGovern Gaeil Colmcille

Ratoath 0-10 Gaeil Colmcille 1-07

They say practice makes perfect and that was the case in Ratoath on Tuesday evening when in injury time Gaeil Colmcille got a free out near the sideline and manager Justin Carry-Lynch called on the services of Gary McGovern who when in the States a couple of summers ago snowboarding pointed from the stands in Boston College. In Ratoath he would be just inside the sideline and would rescue a point for the Kells men.

The first half was a tense affair with both sets of backs coming up trumps when the sides went in at the break 0-05 thanks to points from Shane Freeman, Barry Farrelly (3) and a super from Ryan Farnham from an acute angle emulated that of Conor McManus score for Monaghan on Sunday against Tyrone.

The second half got off to the best possible start when Freeman snatched the only goal of the game to put Kells 3 points ahead. Ratoath proved to be tough cookies and with the introduction of a pacy wing forward who bagged a couple of scores the home side found themselves a point up going into the closing stages only for McGovern to rescue a point for Kells. Overall a fair result and up next for Kells in the B League Division Five will be welcoming Town neighbours Navan O'Mahony's to Pairc Colmcille next Tuesday evening.

Gaeil Colmcille: M Galligan-Edwards, R Fox, S Bennett, B Balfe, O Carolan, N Williams, P Smyth, A O'Rorke, S King, S Freeman (1-01), G McGovern (0-01), J Flanagan, R Farnham (0-02), B Farrelly (0-02), E Ryan. Subs: A Tormey, N Lynch

Ratoath Report

Ratoath 0-10, Gaeil Colmcille 1-07

On a lovely evening in Sean Eiffe Park both sides came away with a share of the spoils.

Gaeil Colmcilles were first to register a score in a hard hitting contest. Points from Frank Coyne and Michael Mulvey left the game level after 15 minutes. Two frees from Colmcilles and points from Dessie Donnelly and Frank Coyne left it 0-5 to 0-05 at the break.

The second half was a free flowing game with both sides missing plenty of opportunities to pull away. After an excellent save from Richard Donnelly, the ball rebounded into the net to leave Colmcilles the advantage. The introduction of Colm Nugent and the work rate of Lombard and Lyons lifted Ratoath. Further points from Coyne and Nugent levelled matters again. It was tit for tat for the remaining 10 minutes, with both sides picking off some brilliant scores one in particular from Nugent. A quick free straight from the training ground from Dessie Donnelly allowed Coyne to point from close range to put the minimum between the teams. Gaeil Colmcille never gave up and pointed a late free for a share of the spoils.

Best for Ratoath, Mick Lavin, Frank Coyne, Colm Nuggent, Michael Mulvey, Eoin Clayton and Conor Killian.

Ratoath: Richard Donnelly, Eoin Clayton, Mick Lavin, Brian Duffy, Enda Conaty, Paul Kirwan, Conor Killian,  Richie Lombard, Darren Lyons, Micheal Mulvey (0-1), John Kirwan, Evan Donnelly, Niall Mc Goldrick, Frank Coyne (0-6, 3f), Robbie Madden. Subs: Dessie Donnelly (0-1), for Evan Donnelly, Colm Nuggent (0-2), for Enda Conaty, Toirdealhac O' Neill for Robbie Madden, Simon Barry for Niall Mc Goldrick, Andrew Gerard for John Kirwan.
