Div 4 FL: 'Wood' end bad run of results

May 23, 2018

Kilmainhamwood's Paddy Carolan

Kilmainhamwood 3-10  Drumcondrath 1-11

Kilmainhamwood ran out deserved winners in this north Meath derby and ended a bad run of losses in the league.

The men in white and blue started off brightly as David Russel kicked the opening point, before two Steven Kiernan points left them three up before the visitors could register their first score. A fine finish from David Russell saw the Wood get their first goal before a brilliant pass from Steven Kiernan set up Paddy Carolan for his first goal to leave the Wood 2-3 to 2 points to the good. Drumcondra fought back and kicked the next three scores before three fine points from Steven Kiernan, Gary Yorke and Andy Farrelly left the Wood with a seven-point advantage at the break.

Drumcondrath started off brighter at the start of the second half and registered the first two points before a second Paddy Carolan goal put the Wood eight points to the good. The two sides then traded points before a Drumcondrath goal with ten minutes to go left just five between the sides and the game was back on as a contest. But another Steven Kiernan point and a fisted effort from David Russell in the last few minutes meant that Drumcondrath would never breach the five-point gap.

Best for the Wood were in defense, David Carolan and Cathal Benneth and in attack David Russell

Drumconrath Report:

Kilmainhamwood 3-10 Drumconrath 1-11

Once again a poor start proved Drumconrath's undoing. Kilmainhamwood had 1-3 on the board before Tomas Conlon pointed after 10 minutes. Drums conceded another goal and while the returning Daniel Byrne pointed 3 times the visitors trailed 2-5 to 0-4 at that stage. Sean McMahon pointed Drumconrath's 5th point as Kilmainhamwood finished the half with another point to leave the score 2-6 to 0-5 at the break.

Kilmainhamwood again started best with 1-1 inside the first 4 minutes of the 2nd half to lead 3-7 to 0-5. Byrne pointed a free to leave 10 points between the sides. Drumconrath had the better exchanges for the last 20 minutes out scoring the home side 1-5 to 0-3 but The Wood had enough done to secure the points.

Pado Farrelly found the net and soon after added a point with Byrne, Stephan Crosby (2) and Chris Tighe adding further scores for the struggling Reds.
