On Saturday evening, former Meath attacker Ollie Murphy started his 28th season representing his club, Carnaross, at adult level.
A member of last year's Meath junior 'D' championship winning side, Murphy came off the bench and scored a vital point as Carnaross opened their 2018 junior 'C' championship bid with a battling 1-11 to 1-10 victory over Syddan at Moynalty.
Ollie - now aged 42 - was one of the stars of Sean Boylan's Meath side that romped to All-Ireland glory 1999, forming an irresistible attacking partnership with Graham Geraghty. He had collected his first All-Ireland medal three years earlier.
Two-time All Star Murphy enjoyed his best season in the Meath jersey in 2001, when he helped the Royals reach the All-Ireland final again. He was a real contender for the Footballer of the Year award but, alas, a hand injury sustained in the second half scuppered both his and Meath's prospects.
