B FL Div 1: Win for Simonstown

March 20, 2018

Simonstown's Joe Lyons

Simonstown 2-12 St. Pats 0-5

Finally!! Football at last, it felt like March was a cursed month for football with all the cancellations and postponements due to the bad weather. Thankfully the weather was benighn and the pitch held up extremely well for this B league division 1 encounter.

Simonstown started brightest with James Heaney and Joe Lyons opening the scoring. It was a tight encounter for the opening 20 minutes with both teams exchanging points. Simonstown's Micky Brennan and Alex Brady added to the score and after 20 minutes the scoreline read Simonstown 0-4 St Pats 0-2. The Navan men had an extremely good finish to the first half with Micky Brennan playing pivitol role. Brennan's accurate shooting enabled Simonstown to extend their lead and Heaney also added to his tally. Heaney was proving to be a good mobile target in the full forward line and Shane Barry was energetic in midfield. Barry's forward running paved the way for Simonstown's opening goal of the match. Barry hand passed it across to Brady who missed after a good save from the Pats keeper. However Barry was there for the rebound which was bundled over the line. Half-Time score Simonstown 1-8 St Pats 0-3.

Pats had an early goal chance saved by Gary Lynch in the opening moments of the second half. Simonstown were guilty of wasting many goal chances but credit is due for the Pats keeeper who was in inspiring form throughout. The Gaels were never truly tested in the second half and they added to their score through Micky Brennan, Joe Lyons and Shane McEnery. Dean Curran, who would regard himself as an unlikely scorer, produced a stunning finish to register his first senior goal. Full Time score Simonstown 1-12 St. Pats 0-4.
