Mayo's Stephen Coen admits that any opportunity given in the side must be grasped with both hands.

Coen was introduced early in the match after Donal Vaughan received a black card in the opening few minutes and he went on to produce an excellent performance as Mayo were pushed all the way against Clare in the All-Ireland SFC qualifiers.

The Hollymount-Carramore clubman stressed to the Western People that when handed an opportunity to impress, you have to make the most of it.

"In fairness to Stephen Rochford, he's not putting in different fellas for experimentation," stated Coen. "He's putting them in because they forced their way in. We know that any chance we get, we have to be able to perform.

"That squad at the moment is so competitive so we can't really afford to be slacking up. The minute I come on, I have to be ready for a big battle. I think you just have to adapt to whatever situation you're put in. We know that we're only guaranteed one more game in this championship, as we speak now.

"That's all we can do, control what you can control. Whether you're in a Connacht final, an All-Ireland final or a qualifier, it doesn't really matter. Each team you play is going to give it 100% so you just have to prepare as best you can."
