Hurling: Vincent Judge Memorial Tournament

June 22, 2017

The inaugural Vincent Judge Memorial Tournament was hosted by the Tooreen Hurling Club recently, as four local National School sides came together for a festival of National Schools Hurling. On offer was the Vincent Judge Memorial Cup and Shield as Tooreen NS, Aghamore NS, Ballyhaunis NS and the amalgamated Cloonlyon/Tavrane side fought it out in the East Mayo sunshine at the Adrian Freeman Memorial Park in Tooreen. Vincent Judge - who passed away after a short illness in 2015 - was a strong supporter of hurling and camogie in the area.

In total 84 hurlers from the local schools took part in the event, which saw Aghamore NS eventually taking the Cup competition and Ballyhaunis NS taking the Shield title on the day. After the event, local county player Fergal Boland (Nephew of the late Vincent Judge) presented a wall-ball to every player who took part on the day. Miriam Judge - daughter of the late Vincent Judge - presented the Vincent Judge Memorial Cup to Tom O'Flaherty (Aghamore NS captain) and the Vincent Judge Memorial Shield to Saad Asif (Ballyhaunis NS captain).

On behalf of the Tooreen Hurling Club, Jimmy Connor thanked the five schools and teachers for their great efforts in the promotion of hurling and to the Judge family for their donation of the cup for this annual event. He also expressed a thanks to Catherine Moran for her great work in catering for the players and supporters alike. He also wished Fergal Boland the 'Best of Luck' against Derry in Mayo's upcoming game. The results of the days action was as follows:

Semi 1: Aghamore NS 4-5 Tavrane/Cloonlyon NS 4-1

Semi 2: Tooreen NS 2-6 Ballyhaunis NS 0-2

Shield Final: Ballyhaunis NS 3-6 Tavrane/Cloonlyon NS 1-1
