With a precious place in the 2016 All-Ireland SFC final up for grabs, Mayo and Tipperary formed a novel semi-final pairing at Croke Park.
Both teams had come through the back door to reach the penultimate stage of the race for the Sam Maguire Cup, but one of them would go no further.
The curtain-raiser on this historic day was the meeting of Donegal and Galway in an intriguing All-Ireland MFC semi-final.
The stakes could hardly have been higher for all four teams on a vital afternoon / evening football action at GAA HQ.
