McGuinness: what the hell happened to Mayo?

Jim McGuinness was surprised by the manner in which Mayo surrendered to Galway in Castlebar on Saturday.

Prior to last weekend's Connacht semi-final, Stephen Rochford's men were rated as the team most likely to challenge Dublin for the Sam Maguire Cup this September, but former Donegal boss McGuinness says a lot of questions were raised by their performance.

"The big question arising from the game is: what the hell happened to Mayo? Were they complacent? Certainly the intensity and focus wasn't there. Nor the ruthlessness." he writes in his weekly column in The Irish Times.

And most worrying of all for Mayo supporters, McGuinness didn't see any evidence that the new management team had eradicated the problems that have held Mayo back over the last number of years: "They still haven't sorted the number three position and their forward line will come under further scrutiny now.

"They are ranked as the number two team in the country but I didn't see that on Saturday night."
