Billy Joe Padden believes Mayo's players should be given credit for not settling for second best in their pursuit of a long-awaited All-Ireland success.

Speaking to The Mayo News, ex-player Padden gave his take on the recent player revolt, saying: "In the not-too-distant past, even when I was playing with Mayo, we were perceived as being brittle and soft.

"We've been asking these Mayo players to be ruthless and single-minded over the last few years. And they have been, plenty of times. And they were again in the last few weeks.

"We can't chastise the players for being ruthless now off the field, when we demand it on them on the field.

"If they continue to bring that mindset on to the pitch next season and then they will be successful again."
