James Horan has described the vote of 'no confidence' by the Mayo footballers in Noel Connelly and Pat Holmes as "high risk".
The joint-managers stepped down on Friday night, just a year after taking over the reins from Horan. The process for finding a new manager will not begin until this day week when the county board holds its monthly meeting.
"I think it was a huge courageous step by the players, one they must have known was very high risk, hugely divisive and potentially career-ending for some," Horan wrote in his Western People column.
"This was not a decision that was taken lightly and the players would have known they were leaving themselves open to public opprobrium by embarking on such a course of action."
He added: "The players will feel terrible about the way things have unfolded. [They] are very geniune guys who in my opinion would never look to publicly humiliate people. However, there is always a fallout in any conflict."
