Curran: Mayo untouchable in the West

Shane Curran maintains his own county of Roscommon wouldn't have done any better than Sligo had they faced Mayo in last Sunday's Connacht SFC final.

Sligo upset the much-hyped Rossies in the semi-final, only to crash to a humiliating 26-point defeat at the hands of the five-in-a-row champions.

"The Connacht final was nothing more than a shambles," the former Roscommon 'keeper wrote in the Westmeath Independent this week.

"It's a real pity that Connacht has got to the point where nobody can give Mayo a proper game. But Mayo deserve great respect and I don't think they get enough credit for how good they are. And no, I don't think Roscommon would have given Mayo a much better game, had the Rossies beaten Sligo in the semi-finals.

"I think Mayo would have dished out a similar hiding to Roscommon as the Rossies are about five years behind them in terms of their development. It will be a long time before anybody can touch Mayo in the Connacht championship."
