What would James Horan do if he was in Brian Cuthbert's shoes and faced with the job of lifting Cork spirits ahead of this evening's All-Ireland SFC qualifier against Kildare?

The Rebels slumped to a disappointing Munster SFC final replay defeat to arch rivals Kerry last Saturday and former Mayo manager outlined what his approach would be in an interview with Newstalk's Off the Ball.

"You'd convince the players first and foremost about how good they are and how physically fit they are, and that they are a serious Division 1 team," he outlined.

"You'd confirm the strong points they have as a team.

"But you'd need to balance it as well with key areas that you need to improve on, taking the opposition into account, like the mobile midfield Kildare have and key things that you can do to turn things on their head and make them an advantage.

"It's always good to check in on what you're strong at as a team and Cork have a huge amount of attributes.

"So it's no harm to check on it this week.

"But the main thing you'd be doing this week is trying to set that you're mentally ready and that you're sharp when the ball is thrown in the air at 7 o'clock, you're feeling strong, energetic and really looking forward to the game.

"That's what I expect the Cork management team to be doing this week."
