Galway have qualified for the Connacht FBD League final after they edged out holders Leitrim 0-13 to 1-9 in Mohill.
The game marked the official opening of the redeveloped Philly McGuinness Memorial Park, but there was disappointment for the home side when their second half comeback narrowly failed. Alan McLoughlin's goal brought them back into it, but the Tribesmen - for whom Shane Walsh notched 0-4 - held on for the win.
It was Leitrim's first defeat in the competition since 2012.
A win or a draw against Roscommon next Sunday will see Mayo face Galway in the final after the charges of Pat Holmes and Noel Connelly eased to a 0-15 to 0-6 victory over IT Sligo in Ballina. The big talking point was the late withdrawal from the Mayo line-up of former Connacht and Ireland rugby star Gavin Duffy.
Duffy was due to make his senior debut after being named to partner Barry Moran at midfield, but was replaced by Alex Corduff.
In Ballyforan, NUIG pipped Roscommon by 0-10 to 0-9. The students had led by 0-7 to 0-5 at half-time. Meanwhile, Niall Carew secured his first win as Sligo manager thanks to a 1-13 to 0-8 victory over GMIT in Collooney.
Mark Breheny netted the only goal in the closing stages.
