Conor Mortimer says his busy social life during his student days in DCU was at odds with that of the late Olympic boxer Darren Sutherland.

In his autobiography to be released this week, the former Mayo star recalls how the 2008 Olympic bronze medallist - who he shared a flat with - was none too impressed with his lifestyle or his late night fridge raids!

"It was D2 nightclub on a Monday, Quinn's in Drumcondra on the Tuesday, Coppers on the Wednesday and Thursday and home on the Friday," Mortimer wrote.

"At DCU, I lived with Darren Sutherland for three months and I don't think that Darren was too impressed with my lifestyle, which was far removed from his as a boxer. He would go on to win a bronze medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics and I really didn't comprehend the scale of this guy's ambitions.

"If you're talking about a 24/7 athlete, Darren was it.

"He left a note on the fridge for me one morning, asking me if I could please replace the ham I had raided the night before. I'd obviously come in after a few pints and satisfied my munchies, but he knew exactly what was in the fridge and how much he was consuming.

"He was a good guy and we shared a similar interest in sports science. News of his death in 2009 hit me hard."
