Mayo SHC final: double joy for Higgins and Ballyhaunis

October 13, 2014

Mayo's Keith Higgins.

Ballyhaunis 1-12
Tooreen 1-10

Ballyhaunis completed a SHC and IFC double when edging out Tooreen to claim the TJ Tyrrell Cup in Tooreen yesterday.

A week after they secured IFC honours, the red and blacks put the disappointment of last year's final defeat behind them to take the spoils. It was a proud occasion for the Higgins family with All Star footballer Keith winning his seventh county SHC medal, older brother Pierce winning his 10th and their father Pete managing the side.

Pat Larkin's 17th minute goal helped the home side to a slender 1-5 to 0-7 lead at the break, but a goal from substitute Tadhg Buckley midway through the second half turned the game in Ballyhaunis' favour.

Despite outscoring Tooreen by 1-8 to 0-1, the winners were forced to withstand a late rally from their opponents.
