Liam McHale has been appointed player performance coach with the Cavan footballers.

The appointment of the former Mayo star was widely expected after Peter Donnelly left the set-up to take up a coaching role with his native Tyrone. It comes just days after McHale was involved in a war of words with Peter Leahy, who claimed he had secured his services after his bid to become Westmeath's new football manager was rejected by county board delegates. McHale insisted he hadn't agreed to come on board with Leahy in the event of his appointment being ratified.

McHale had hoped to take charge of his native county along with his brother-in-law Kevin McStay, but the duo lost out to the Noel Connelly/Pat Holmes combination.

Other new additions to Terry Hyland's backroom team are selector Kevin Downes and Eoin Maguire, who will assume the role of strength and conditioning coach.

A statement from Cavan GAA this evening read: "Cavan County Board are delighted to announce a number of additions to our senior management team for 2015.

"Terry Hyland will continue as manager with both Anthony Forde and Padraig Dolan as selectors.

"Former Killeshandra & Cavan Gaels player Kevin Downes joins the team as a selector whilst Liam McHale is coming in as player performance coach with Eoin Maguire taking up the post of strength & conditioning coach.

"The officer board wish Terry his team and our senior panel every good luck in the coming season."
