McStay's odds for Mayo job drift slightly as Connelly comes into contention

September 10, 2014

Joint Mayo managers Noel Connelly and Pat Holmes celebrate the final whistle in the 2006 Cadbury All-Ireland U21FC final against Cork - INPHO

Kevin McStay is still the odds on favourite to succeed James Horan as the next Mayo football manager but former county captain Noel Connelly is attracting some support.

Connelly captained Mayo to All-Ireland final appearances in 1997 and '98, and was joint manager of the All-Ireland winning Mayo U21 side from 2006 alongside Pat Holmes.

John Mullholland Bookmakers say that the top two favourites have closed in on the betting.

"Kevin McStay made his passionate pitch on the Sunday Game the day after James Horan stepped down and he remains the clear favourite albeit he has drifted in the market from his initial 4/11 to 1/2," said Kevin Breslin of the Galway based bookmakers firm. "This means that according to the betting, we expect he has a 66% chance of getting the job.

"His biggest rival was actually the favourite for a spell back in 2010, Noel Connelly was captain of the '96 and '97 side and is seen as McStay's danger.

"Others to note in the market are Anthony McGarry, James Nallen, minor manager Enda Gilvarry and former Castlebar Mitchells manager Pat Holmes. It is not expected to come from outside these six names."
