Seamus O'Shea has taken to Twitter to publicly thank James Horan for his input as Mayo senior football manager.

During four years at the helm, Horan led the county to a clean sweep of Connacht titles but failed narrowly to bring the Sam Maguire Cup back to Mayo for the first time since 1951.

After contesting the All-Ireland finals of 2012 and 2013, the Connacht champions were pipped by Kerry after extra time in a thrilling semi-final replay at the Gaelic Grounds last Saturday. Horan announced afterwards that he would be stepping down.

Midfield powerhouse O'Shea says Horan was "a great manager and a great man". Breaking a 70-day silence on Twitter this morning, the Breaffy clubman posted:

"Been a tough week but just want to say thanks to everyone for the incredible support last weekend and all year.

"Also, special thanks to James Horan for everything he's done for us over the last 4 years. A great manager and a great man. Will be missed."
