Gilvarry: we can't argue with the result

Enda Gilvarry wasn't making any excuses after Mayo relinquished their grip on the Tom Markham Cup yesterday.

Speaking after Mayo's 1-14 to 2-7 defeat to Kerry, Gilvarry - who refused to be drawn on his future as minor manager - said: "It's certainly disappointing. We can't argue with the result.

"I thought our guys fought extremely hard and played well, but under an awful lot of pressure. They defended extremely well, an awful lot of scramble defence. We have to admit Kerry had a lot of goal chances.

"We kept on coming back at them, as we always say about this team, we keep going, keep going. We tried, but we just couldn't get close enough to them to put them under real pressure.

Gilvarry admitted that the loss of captain Cian Hanley to a first half knee injury was a big blow.

"Nobody doubts the ability of Cian Hanley, and nobody doubts the influence he has on the team. It certainly was a huge loss to us, but I don't want to take away from Kerry's win.

"Quite simply, they were better than us on the day. And neither do I want to take away from the guys who came in because they played their part."
