Mayo forward Cillian O'Connor believes that they are driven by the fact that there is so much competition for places on the team.
O'Connor could be forgiven for thinking that he is one of the first names in the team sheet ahead of a game, but that is certainly not the case.
The former Young Footballer of the Year admitted to the Western People that no player on the team is guaranteed a starting spot and that's what drives them on.
"The competition within the squad compared to when we started in 2011 is on a different planet," stressed O'Connor.
"It's not even about the first fifteen anymore. I don't envy James when he has to tell fellas who could have been going well in training and breaking even with some of the starting players, that they're not even going to be in the subs. It's a difficult part of his job."
He added: "People who might have assumed were definite starters in years gone by, it can no longer be said about so that keeps everyone on their toes. We need that - and we need training to be like that - to try and get a seventy minute performance."
