Success for Under 16 hurlers

Last weekend saw the Mayo GAA U16 hurlers travel to Ballyshannon in Donegal for the Peter OKeefe Memorial Tournament.

Mayo played Tyrone in their opening game coming out on top on a 3-8 to 2-8 scoreline in the thirty minute game. Next they faced a better Derry side with the Oak Leaf County winning on a 2-12 to 1-6 scoreline. In Mayo's final game of the day, they faced near neighbours Roscommon in the Shield final, with the Green and Red coming out on top on a facile 3-10 to 0-2 scoreline.

Round 1: Mayo 3-8 Tyrone 2-8. Round 2: Mayo 1-6 Derry 2-12. Shield Final: Mayo 3-10 Roscommon 0-2.

The Mayo GAA U14 hurlers made the short trip to Tubbercurry for their National Academy Day. Their opening tie saw them draw with Donegal on a 2-5 to 0-11 scoreline. Next up was the clash of Mayo and Roscommon. Here Mayo showed some strong scoring ability coming out on top on a 3-21 to 2-3 scoreline.

The final game of the day saw Mayo overpowering a weakened Sligo side on a 7-15 to 2-4 scoreline to round off an succesful days hurling for the young Mayo side. Best for the Mayo U14s on the day were goalkeeper Ciaran Doherty, backs Liam Kelly and Finnian Burke while up front Eoin Delaney and Jack Coyne showed scoring promise.

The midfield pairing of Cormac Phillips and Jack Carney were the driving force behind the team from start to finish.

Round 1: Mayo 0-11 Donegal 2-5. Round 2: Mayo 3-21 Roscommon 2-3. Round 3: Mayo 7-15 Sligo 2-4.
