John Maughan has added his voice to the growing calls for the introduction of a two-tier championship.

The Mayo native will carve a niche for himself in the history of the GAA on Sunday when he becomes the first person to manage a team in all four provincial football championships.

His CV includes stints with Mayo, Clare and Fermanagh and this weekend he will hope his Offaly charges can spring a surprise on Meath at Pairc Tailteann.

“It's crying out for a two-tier system,” he replied to the Irish Independent when quizzed on the hot topic of debate in gaelic football circles at the moment.

“I've been involved in All-Ireland 'B' championship wins with Clare and Fermanagh. With Clare, in particular, the confidence (gained) and the fun, I remember it being celebrated, the first adult competition that Clare had won in decades. It was Longford we beat in Ballinasloe and it propelled Clare football at the time.

“Having the likes of Carlow, Wexford and Offaly competing at that level, it's a no-brainer. You've got to address some issue there.”
