Now that the dust has settled on this year’s Allianz FL Division 1 campaign, supporters up and down the country have a better idea of how their team is shaping up ahead of this summer’s championship action.

Success starved Mayo celebrated their league win with gusto in Croke Park last Sunday and the emergence of Matthew Ruane as a midfielder to be reckoned with fills their followers with renewed hope that their 68-year wait for the Sam Maguire Cup to pay them a visit could be about to come to an end.

Man-of-the-match in Mayo’s 2016 All-Ireland U-21 final win over Cork, midfielder Ruane has blossomed under James Horan’s management.

His midfield partnership with Breaffy club-mate Aidan O’Shea laid the foundations for their first outright league win in 18 years.

Back in round 6, his 68th minute goal ended Kerry’s unbeaten run in Tralee while he repeated the trick in last Sunday’s decider.

The county’s supporters will be hoping they will be seeing more of the same from the athletic Ruane in this summer’s championship.
