Mayo sound out O'Connor

Kerry manager Jack O'Connor celebrates with selector Ger O'Keeffe after beating Cork

Mayo county board are understood to have approached Jack O'Connor about filling their vacant football manager's post.

The Irish Daily Mirror is reporting that the three-time Kerry All-Ireland winning manager has been contacted about taking over from Stephen Rochford, who stepped down earlier this week. Mayo could face competition from Kerry for O'Connor's services, however, with speculation linking the Dromid man with a return to the Kingdom hot seat for a third time.

Two of O'Connor's All-Ireland wins came at the expense of Mayo in 2004 and '06, while he was in charge of Kerry's All-Ireland minor winning sides in 2014 and '15 and would therefore be familiar with many of the current senior squad.

Former Donegal manager Jim McGuinness last night ruled himself out of the running to replace Rochford, while James Horan has played down reports that he is set to reprise the role he held from 2011 to '14.
