Mayo manager Stephen Rochford is confident that defender Keith Higgins will be back in the squad next week.
Higgins opted to throw in his lot with the Mayo hurlers during the NHL campaign and never featured for the footballers as they earned a last day draw against Donegal to ensure their survival in NFL 1.
The former football All-Star was outstanding for the hurlers as they claimed the NHL 2B title when defeating Down in the final last Sunday week.
But now, Rochford expects Higgins to return to the fold sooner rather than later and he will be a welcome addition to the squad, especially after the news that Lee Keegan would be sidelined for a number of months.
"We left Keith to his own devices with hurling until the league was over, so we'll talk to him this week and we look forward to having him on board," Rochford told the Western People.
"We will take this week off so next week. Keith has given great service and all indications were to us that he just wanted time off. He's kept his fitness levels up so I don't have any immediate concerns at the moment. We spoke in January and we said we'll speak again at the end of the week."
