June 22, 2017

James Califf - Dreadnots

Dreadnots leaped-frogged Naomh Mairtin at the top of the Division 1 table with a 2-11 to 0-10 victory at Monasterboice on Tuesday night.

The Clogherhead men scored two goals in the opening 21 minutes but Sam Mulroy replied with four points to cut the gap to 2-2 to 0-6 at half time.

The Dreadnots were in charge for most of the second half and despite a brief rally from the Mairtins, they held out to win by seven points.

Clan na Gael joined the Dreadnots on nine points after securing a 4-13 to 3-9 win over Geraldines in an entertaining contest.

Clans scored all four goals in the first half through Billy Smith (2), Robbie Curran and Craig Long as they led by 4-6 to 0-6 at the break.

The Geraldines battled back in the second period and hit the net through Matthew Corcoran (2) Jim McEneaney but the Dundalk men had done enough to secure victory.

County champions, Sean O'Mahonys, are just a point off the pace after scoring a 2-15 to 2-6 win over Kilkerley Emmets.

The teams were evenly matched throughout the first half but a late Ben McLaughlin goal saw the Dundalk men lead by 1-6 to 0-5 at the break.

Just after the restart Conor Crawley added a second goal to put his side firmly in charge. Shane Lennon (penalty) and Daniel McKeown replied with goals but points from Conor Finnegan and Stephen Kilcoyne ensured the O'Mahonys came out on top.

The game featured the Quigley brothers in goals at both ends -Cillian for Emmets and older brother Seamus for O'Mahonys.

St Patricks saw their poor run of form continue as they lost out to Dundalk Gaels on a scoreline of 1-9 to 1-7.

In a tight first half the Pats edged ahead at the break by 0-5 to 0-4 with Danny O'Connor and Eoin O'Connor among the scorers.

A Danny O'Connor goal on 51 minutes had the Pats 1-7 to 0-7 in front but once again they failed to finish off a game and the Gaels came back to win by two with the help of an Eamonn Kenny goal.

Newtown Blues picked up their first win of the campaign when they defeat St Marys by 2-16 to 3-11.

The Ardee men had the better of the first half and a goal from Ronan Carroll helped them lead by 1-7 to 0-7 at the break.

Although Robbie Leavy and Alan Kirk added goals for the Marys it was the Blues who had the better of the second half and struck three goals to pick up a much-needed victory.
