FL1 round-up: Pats snatch dramatic win over Dreadnots

April 24, 2017

Paddy Keenan - St Pats

St Patricks snatched a dramatic 1-14 to 2-10 victory over Dreadnots in a very entertaining game at Lordship thanks to late points from Paddy Keenan and substitute Evan White.

In a game that ebbed and flowed throughout, it was the visitors who were first to open up a gap when Pepe Smith scored the first goal on the quarter hour. However, the Pats hit back with a goal from Daniel Rice to take a 1-8 to 1-7 lead into the half time break.

The hosts went three ahead early in the second half but the Dreadnots levelled soon after. The Clogher side looked to be heading for victory when they went ahead three minutes from the end only for Keenan and White to win it for the Pats.

Clan na Gael continued their impressive return to the Division 1 ranks when they claimed at 2-10 to 2-7 win over their local rivals, Sean O'Mahonys at Castletown.

It was the visitors who got the better start and went ahead through a Conor Crawley goal, but that was to be his side's only score of the half. The Clans dominated the remainder of the half and a goal from Billy Smith saw them lead by 1-4 to 1-0 at half time.

The home side continued to hold the upper hand after the restart and a second goal from Billy Smith helped them remain firmly in control. The O'Mahonys gave themselves brief hope when sub Paddy Byrne scored their goal in the closing minutes but the Clans held out for a deserved win.

David Reid was once again the scoring hero for Mattock Rangers with a total of 2-7 as they defeated Kilkerley Emmets by 2-13 to 0-9 in Collon.

Reid scored four successive frees midway through the first half to help his side establish a 0-8 to 0-2 lead. Younger brother Adrian also chipped in with two points while Shane Lennon and Tadhg McEneaney replied for Kilkerley.

Reid struck his first goal early in the second half and although Kilkerley rallied briefly, his second goal, along with points from Aaron O'Brien sealed a comfortable victory.

Nh Mairtin turned in another eye-catching display in Division 1 as they brushed aside the challenge of Newtown Blues at Newfoundwell on a 4-15 to 0-12 scoreline.

The Monasterboice men were given a great boost two minutes in when a Conor Whelan effort crossed the line for the first goal of the game.

With the help of points from Ross Nally and Robert Carr, the Blues fought their way back into contention but just on the stroke of half time Conor Healy fired in a second goal to make it 2-8 to 0-6 at the break.

The Blues, who were hampered by the loss of key players through injury during the first half never looked like being able to mount a comeback in the second period. The visitors always looked in full control and completed the victory with goals from Brian Berrill and sub Mark McCullough.

St Marys picked up their first win of the campaign when they held off a late rally to score a 0-13 to 1-8 win over Geraldines in Ardee.

The visitors got off to the perfect start as Michael Rogers found the net with a speculative effort. However, the Marys were quickly into the game and points from Darren Clarke and Alan Kirk helped them to lead by 0-8 to 1-3 at half time.

The Marys dominated the third quarter and Mark Fay's point on 50 minutes had them in a strong position with a 0-13 to 1-3 lead. The Gers fought back with five unanswered points but time ran out as the hosts held out for victory.

Dundalk Gaels bounced back from their opening day defeat to score a 1-15 to 1-5 win at home to Cooley Kickhams.

The hosts dominated the first half of the game and a goal from Derek Crilly helped them to lead by 1-9 to 0-3 at the break, with Conor  Rafferty scoring all three points for Cooley.

The visitors gave themselves hope with a goal from Michael Rafferty on 40 minutes but they were unable to build on that score as the Gaels held out comfortably in a game that saw Jason Clarke, Sean Fee and Gerard McSorley also on the scoresheet.
