Leinster Club IFC: Late points help Joes record dramatic victory

October 24, 2016

Bernard Mulligan - St Josephs

ST JOSEPHS 1-11

ST ANDREWS, CARLOW 0-13

Late points from Conal O'Hanlon and Shane McQuillan helped St Josephs record a dramatic victory over the Carlow champions, St Andrews, in the Leinster Club Championship.

The game played at Cluskey Park on Saturday afternoon saw little between the teams throughout but it looked as if the visitors had done enough to edge the tie when they went ahead with less than four minutes to play. However, O'Hanlon levelled matters from a free before McQuillan landed the winning point in injury time.

Not for the first time this season, O'Hanlon's scores proved vital as he also grabbed the only goal of the game five minutes before the break.

The Joes went into the game with high hopes after clinching the Louth title but they made a slow start and found themselves 0-3 to 0-1 behind inside seven minutes with O'Hanlon registering his side's first score.

The home side then upped the pace and successive scores from Derek Mulligan, Alan Quigley and Conal O'Hanlon to lead for the first time at 0-4 to 0-3 at the end of the first quarter.

St Andrews responded to the challenge and landed three points of their own to regain the lead before O'Hanlon found the net to put the hosts 1-4 to 0-6 in front.

However, the Carlow side dominated the remainder of the half and fired over another three without reply to lead by 0-9 to 1-4 at the break.

After an early Craig Doherty point was cancelled out, the Joes regained the initiative with points from Conall Smyth, Doherty and Quigley to edge ahead at 1-8 to 0-10.

The next two points of the game were shared before the visitors kicked another two to lead by 0-13 to 1-9. However, there was time for one more twist in the tale as O'Hanlon and McQuillan combined to send the Louth champions into the next round.
