FL1: Availability of county men proves vital for St Fechins

May 23, 2016

St. Fechin's Ronan Holcroft

Division 1 League Round 7

St Patricks GFC 0-12

St Fechins GAA 2-8

St Fechins travelled to Lordship with the knowing they had their two county men, Ronan Holcroft and Bevan Duffy, available for the first time this year. This proved vital as they contributed 1-7 between them. It was Holcroft who opened the scoring after a minute. The Pats however, slowly started to dominate proceedings. Points from Karl Rice, Paddy Keenan, Ray Finnegan and Daniel O'Connor saw them sail into a five points to one lead. Two great saves by Mark Savage kept the Fechins in the game. A Fechins attack saw Bevan Duffy shrug off two defenders and plant the ball into the Pats net. Two minutes later Paul King put over a point from forty metres to level the game. It was nip and tuck from then until half time. Paddy Keenan kicked three close in frees, but the visitors struck back with two long range points from play from Duffy and Holcroft to leave the minimum between the teams at half time, 0-8 to 1-4.

Paddy Keenan and Daniel Rice extended the Pats lead early in the second half but these were quickly cancelled out by Holcroft. Conor Grogan and Daniel O'Connor extended the lead to three points with ten minutes to go. Things did not look to good for the visitors as they had also lost Colm O'Neill and Niall Devlin to injury. But great credit must go to the Fechins for not throwing in the towel. A free from Holcroft late in the game left two between the sides. From the kickout  Ronan Holcroft gained possession on the left wing and sent over a fantastic point to reduce the deficit to one point. In injury time Bevan Duffy kicked a high ball into the Pats square, full forward Jamie King soared highest and cooly punched the ball into the Pats net. As the Fechins supporters celebrated, the Pats launched their last attack. A final brilliant save by Mark Savage denied the Pats and ensured two very valuable points for St Fechins.
