May 16, 2016

Dreadnots maintained their lead at the top of the Division 1 table when a late Ronan Califf point give them a 1-10 to 1-9 victory over Nh Mairtin.

It looked as if the Clogherhead side were on their way to a first defeat of the season when they trailed by three points with just three minutes remaining but points from Pepe Smith got them back level before Califf struck the winner.

Smith was also prominent in the first half as he grabbed the first goal of the game to send his team in at the break leading by 1-3 to 0-4.

The second half saw the Mairtins hold the upper hand and when Stephen Campbell found the net it looked as if they were on course for an important win. However, the Dreadnots refused to give up and snatched victory at the death.

There's no stopping the Geraldines as they made it five wins from six after a 4-12 to 3-4 victory over St Fechins.

The Haggardstown side got off to a blistering start as Glen Trainor found the net inside 60 seconds and added a second soon after before Conal Hoey made it 3-1 to 0-1on ten minutes.

The Fechins hit back before the interval with a goal from a Jamie King penalty but they were trailing by 3-6 to 1-1 at the break.

The Termonfeckin side continued their revival in the second half as goals from Jamie King and Eoghan Duffy saw the cut the gap to six points. However, the Gers responded in impressive fashion as a goal from Gareth Neacy put the game beyond doubt leaving the Haggardstown men second on the table.

O'Connells fought back from the dead for the second week in succession and this time they were rewarded with an impressive 3-8 to 2-10 victory over St Patricks at The Grove.

The Pats got off to a flying start and were six points ahead on ten minutes when AidanMcCann found the net. Cian Doyle responded with a goal for the O'Connells to cut the gap to 1-6 to 1-3 at the break.

The visitors looked to be cruising to victory when Sean McGeough raised the green flag to see his team lead by 2-8 to 1-4 with 20 minutes remaining. Goals from Doyle and a Stuart Reynolds penalty levelled the game entering the closing moments before a Niall Conlon free gave the O'Connells victory.

Newtown Blues claimed their first win of the season when they came out on top against St Marys on a scoreline of 2-12 to 1-10.

The Ardee men were in fine form in the opening stages and scored five unanswered points inside 12 minutes. The Blues responded well and struck for the first goal of the game through Keith Carr but that was quickly cancelled out by a Darren Clarke three-pointer as the Marys went in at the break leading by 1-7 to 1-5.

The second half produced nothing like the same entertainment as the Blues took command of proceedings with Hugh McGinn running the show as his side went on to win by five points with Paul Moore claiming a crucial second goal.

Meanwhile, Mattock Rangers got back to winning ways when they recorded a two-point win over Cooley Kickhams on Thursday night.

Points from Ciaran Sheelan gave Cooley a slight advantage in the opening half but David Reid was in fine form at the other and and his points ensured that the teams went in level at five points apiece.

The second half proved to be a very low scoring affair as points from Christy Grimes (2) and Reid proved enough to give the Collon men victory with Cooley's only reply coming from a Micahel Rafferty point four minutes from time.

Kilkerley Emmets take on Sean O'Mahonys tonight (Monday).
