Match Report; Paddy Sheelin Cup Final

St. Marys GFC V Newtown Blues 4.00pm Sunday 10th May in Clogherhead

A wet and windy day in Clogherhead saw the first final of the year take place in the paddy sheelan cup final as  Ardee St Marys took on the Newtown Blues.  It was 5 minutes into the game before we seen the first score, a long ball by Robbie Leavy into the square where Darren Clarke took nicely and fed it off to Mark Fay to tap over the bar.  The Marys were the better team in the opening 12 minutes but failed to create any clear cut chances, the blues brought the game level in the 13th minute with a good point from distance.  A minute later the blues went ahead when the ball was broken down in the middle of the field and kicked long and put over the bar.  The blues added further scores in the 20th and 23rd minute to leave them 3 points ahead.  A blow to the Marys in the 23rd minute as Duane Crosby pulled up after a kick out and had to be replaced; Peter Duffy was the man to replace him.  In the 24th minute the Blues extended their lead with a point from play.  The blues got points from play in the 25th and 27th minutes.  Two minutes into injury time in the first half and Alan Kirk scored a point from a free to leave the Marys trailing by 4 at half time.

Half Time Score St Marys 0-2 Newtown Blues 0-6

The first score of the second half came in the 36th minute in the form of a goal from the Blues.   Ronan Carroll responded with a good point from play a minute later.  Like the first half we had a period where no team got a score as the conditions deteriorated.  In the 46th minute Darren Clarke took a ball well and found himself through on goal, a point was the result as the Blues defence applied pressure on him.  Darren got another point two minutes later with a well taken 45.  In the 47th minute great work by Darren again as he stopped the blues coming out and won the ball and slotted it over the bar.  The Marys were dealt another blow in the 53rd minute as Alan Kirk received a second yellow and was off.  In the 55th minute Robbie Leavy rose highest to win a Blues kick out, he delivered a lovely ball into Mark Fay and mark slotted it over the bar.  In the 58th the Marys got a free and Darren Clarke slotted over the bar from his hands.  The Blues got a free and slotted it over to leave 1 goal between the teams.  The Marys looked to break as Ronan Carroll broke free only to be stopped in his tracks by the blues defence and Darren put over the resulting free.  The Marys fought hard with 14 men but couldn't find a route to goal through the well organised Blues defence.  Best for the Marys were Robbie Leavy and Darren Clarke.
