FL3 round-up: Fionnbarra promoted

September 29, 2014

Naomh Fionnbarra are back in Division 2 football after clinching the Division 3 league title after William Woods inspired a comfortable victory over rivals, Westerns, on Sunday morning.

The sides went into Sunday's showdown on the back of 11 straight wins in the league, but from the early stages it was clear that the Finbarrs were going to claim the Dixon Cup.

The Westerns were unable to reproduce the form that saw them top the table for much of the season, and the Finbarrs took advantage as a goal from Bernard Osborne saw them lead by 1-8 to 0-3 at half time.

Two further goals from William Woods, who finished with 2-11, helped secure the 3-15 to 0-6 victory as Westerns finished with 14 men.

Meanwhile, Lannleire booked their place in the promotion play-offs when they proved too strong for Stabannon Parnells on Sunday morning as they emerged winners by 2-15 to 0-7.

The Dunleer men recovered from the loss of Ian Mulroy and Bob Murphy to nasty first half injuries before going into the break leading by 0-7 to 0-2 at half time.

Stabannon reduced the gap to one point early in the second half but Lannleire steadied themselves with a Paul Callan goal before Colin Murphy hit the net to seal the win.

Dowdallshill finished the Division 3 league on a high when they recorded their third victory in four outings.

The Dundalk side travelled to Omeath on Sunday morning where the scored an 18-point win. One man who would probably wish the games would keep coming is Noel Finnegan who followed up his 3-4 from last week with a further four goals today. Not to be totally out done,  his full forward colleague Paul Gill helped himself to 3-1.

At half time the Hill led by a massive 7-5 to 0-3.
