Sean O'Mahonys turned in a dominant display to see off the challenge of town rivals, Young Irelands, as they got their Intermediate Championship Group 2 campaign off to the perfect start.

Heading into the game in St Brigid's Park, many were expecting a close contest but it didn't turn out that way as the Point Road men illustrated the value of playing Division 1 football.

The O'Mahonys took the initiative from the opening whistle and rarely allowed the Young Irelands to get a foothold in the game.

Peter Nixon illustrated the determination of the Seans as the midfielder, playing against his former colleagues, sent over three points in the opening half to see his side take a deserved 0-9 to 0-2 lead going into the break.

Although Nixon had to be replaced at half time after picking up an injury, his side looked well in control at that stage.

The Young Irelands came out in the second half hoping to find the inspiration to stage a comeback but it was the O'Mahonys who maintained dominance and when David Dowling scored the first goal of the game, there was no way back.

Young Irelands did rally in the closing stages and saw Mark Savage grab a consolation goal from the penalty spot, with their side tagging on a couple of points to give the scoreboard a more respectable look.
