July 07, 2014
St Joseph's moved clear at the top of Division 2 thanks to a combination of a comfortable win over St Mochtas and Oliver Plunketts defeat at the hands of Na Piarsaigh.
Despite conceding the opening three points of the game to Shane McMahon, the Joes hit back to level at the end of the first quarter while a goal from Conall Smyth had them leading by 1-10 to 0-7 at the break. The Mochtas fought back to within two points but the Joes finished with goals from Adam O'Connor and Conall Smyth to seal a 3-16 to 0-15 win.
Meanwhile, Oliver Plunketts slipped back into joint second place after a surprisingly heavy 3-9 to 0-2 defeat at the hands of Na Piarsaigh on Sunday. The game at the Rock Road saw the hosts get off to the perfect start with David Boyle converting a penalty in the opening minute to help his side lead by 1-6 to 0-1 after ten minutes. Two goals from Cormac Malone just before the break saw Na Piarsaigh take a comfortable 3-6 to 0-1 lead at the interval. The outcome was never in doubt in what proved to be a very low-scoring second half with the Dundalk men outscoring the Plunketts by 0-3 to 0-1.
St Fechins are also just two points off the top after an impressive 2-12 to 0-10 win away to Roche Emmets, where once again the scoring threat of Ronan Holcroft made the difference. There wasn't a lot between the teams in the close opening first half but Holcroft's penalty goal made the difference at the break as his side went in leading by 1-2 to 0-2. The scoring rate improved in the second half but it was the Fechins who had the better of things and opened up a seven point lead. Roche battled back in the final quarter but a goal from Jamie King finally put the game beyond their reach.
St Marys remain in the play-off positions after recording a 1-17 to 1-9 win over St Brides in Ardee on Friday evening. The home side had the edge from the start and with Paudie Clarke and Alan Kirk among the scorers they led by 0-8 to 0-5 at the break. Emmet Kirk kept the Brides in touch with two points. A Paudie Clarke goal along with some well taken points put the Marys in command and the held out for the victory despite a late Aaron Hoey goal.
Young Irelands joined Clan na Gael on six points after securing a three-point win at home to Dundalk rivals Clan na Gael on a scoreline of 1-13 to 1-10. The Clans lost Paul Gartland to a red card on ten minutes and then saw Young Irelands score the first goal of the game through Mark Savage. However, the Clans rallied and Billy Smith found the net to send his team in trailing by just 1-7 to 1-6. The visitors remained in contention for much of the second half but the Young Irelands did enough to remain in control and late points from Joseph Flynn and Dermot Mone saw them through.
The battle of the bottom sides saw Hunterstown produce a strong finish to snatch a dramatic 0-14 to 1-10 over Glyde Rangers in Tallanstown. The home side looked set for victory when they went into the last five minutes with a three-point lead but three quick points had Rovers level. Ryan Burns then snatched victory with a magnificent last-minute point. Hunterstown had started the game well but a Damien Garland goal helped Glyde trail by just a point at half time.
