County champions, Newtown Blues, suffered a surprise defeat when they lost out to Kilkerley Emmets in their opening Division 1 game of the season.

Late goals from Alan McGeough (penalty) and Daniel McKeown saw the Emmets claim a 2-9 to 0-11 victory in a dramatic finale.

The home side, who put aside their disappointing Sheelan Cup form, had been leading by 0-5 to 0-4 at the break. Robert Carr led the scoring for the Blues with four points.

St Patricks got the defence of their Cardinal O'Donnell Cup title off to a winning start with a 1-14 to 1-4 victory at home to Dreadnots.

The Dreadnots arrived buoyed by some fine Sheelan Cup form but soon found themselves trailing and needed a Peter Kirwan goal to keep them in touch at the break when trailing by 0-8 to 1-2.

The Pats maintained their advantage in the second half and settled the issue with an Eoin O'Connor goal in the closing ten minutes.

O'Connells recorded an impressive victory over Dundalk Gaels when came out on top by 3-7 to 0-5.

Goals from Cian Doyle and Robert Quigley had the visitors in a commanding 2-5 to 0-3 lead at the interval. A third goal from Paul McKeever wrapped up a comfortable win for the O'Connells.

The game finished with an unsavoury incident with a flare-up between a number of players that resulted in Derek Crilly and Sean Connolly being sent-off.

Naomh Mairtin recorded the first win of the league season when they recorded a 1-14 to 1-11 win over Cooley Kickhams on Wednesday night at Monasterboice.

An early goal from Brian Berrill was cancelled out by Brian White as the Martins went in at the break leading by 1-7 to 1-6.

The second half was an even affair but the Monasterboice side finished the stronger to claim victory with late points from Wayne Campbell, Rooney and Stephen Campbell.

Meanwhile, O Raghallaighs and Mattock Rangers played out an entertaining draw at the Gaelic Grounds.

The visitors were in fine form in the opening half as they led by 0-11 to 0-3 at the break. However, O Raghallaighs fought back and goals from Ben Rogan and Craig McEnteggart looked to have given them victory.

However, Mattock hit back with a late point from Christy Grimes to rescue a draw.

The game between Geraldines and Sean O'Mahonys was postponed due to a bereavement.
