Tommy Durnin took centre-stage at Clan na Gael Park when he inspired Westerns to a comfortable 5-14 to 0-11 win over Annaghminnon Rovers in the Junior Championship.
The Louth player bagged 3-7 as the Reaghstown men bounced back from their defeat to Glyde Rangers the previous week to get their campaign back on track.
Durnin opened the scoring with a goal and added two quick-fire points before Ronan Byrne kicked the first point for Rovers.
However, a second goal from Durnin saw his side lead by 2-9 to 0-6 at the break, with Richie Ashfield and Shane McMahon replying for Annaghminnon.
The Westerns added a third goal through Ciaran Campbell early in the second and Ryan Duffy also found the net before Durnin completed his hat-trick from the penalty spot. David Marron scored all five points for Annaghminnon in the second half.
Lannleire easily accounted for opponents, Stabannon Parnells in their Group 1 championship encounter in Haggardstown on Friday night as they came out on top with a 2-12 to 0-3 win.
Incessant rainfall throughout the match made conditions very difficult, but Lannleire played some good football in the first half and led 1-10 to 0-1 at the interval. Paul Callan found the net for the villagers on 20 minutes after finishing off a move started out the field.
The game was as good as over when Mark Dunne's ground shot beat the Stabannon keeper for Lannleire's second goal, just one minute into the second half.
Roche Emmets eased into the last eight when they defeated Na Piarsaigh by 2-14 to 1-11 at Tallanstown on Sunday afternoon.
Roche made a good start and were 0-3 to 0-1 up after the early exchanges but the Dundalk men then got on top and points from Paul Mallon and Mark Larkin along with a Tommy Muckian goal on 15 minutes had them leading by 1-5 to 0-3.
However, Roche regained control and had Barry O’Hare and Shane Byrne on target along with a goal from Eugene Murray on 25 minutes, as they went in at the break leading by 1-9 to 1-5.
Roche tightened their grip on the match when Murray scored his second goal just a minute after the restart. Na Piarsaigh battled to get back into the game with points from Larkin and Mallon but Roche were in no mood to surrender their advantage and they held out for a comfortable win with Dermot Carthy and O’Hare adding points.
Nh Malachi scored four second half goals on their way to a 5-11 to 0-13 win over Wolfe Tones that secured their place in the quarter-finals.
The game in Tallanstown on Sunday afternoon was produced an entertaining first half with little between the teams. Darren Weldon was in fine scoring form for the Drogheda side as they took a 0-9 to 1-5 lead into the break. Padraig Moley scored the first goal of the game to keep the Mals in touch.
The second half was a different story as the Courtbane men dominated and goals from Padraig Moley, Jack Kirwan, Jamie Kelly and Keelan Conlon gave them a comfortable win.
Glyde Rangers made it two wins from two when they got the better of John Mitchels on a 2-13 to 1-9 scoreline at Stabannon on Sunday evening. The teams met on Friday night at the Clans only for the game to be abandoned due to the weather after 15 minutes when Glyde were leading by 1-2 to no score.
Sunday’s game saw the Mitchels enjoy the better of the first half as they played with a strong wind and a goal from Mickey Nulty along with points from John Gallagher and Trevor Matthews had them in a strong position.
However, a goal from a Ciaran Sheridan penalty and a second from Trevor O’Brien just before the break put the Tallanstown side in a strong position as they cut the gap to just 1-7 to 2-3 at the break.
The Mitchels also lost Sean Sweeney to a red card at the end of the first half and they were unable to challenge Glyde in the second half. Points from Barry Sharkey, Niall Sharkey and Cein Sheridan helped the Tallanstown side ease to victory.
The game between Sean McDermotts and St Nicholas had reached half time at Haggardstown on Friday night before a decision was made to call it off.
The Seans were the more disappointed side as they had built up a 3-4 to 0-2 advantage at that stage with Kevin McMahon having scored two goals and Lorcan Myles adding another, while Tony Kelly kicked two points.
